Convenient Family Law Assistance in the Bay Area

The cost of living in the Bay Area is among the highest in the country, and legal services are no exception. Family law attorneys in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose routinely charge high hourly rates with retainers of $10,000 or more. For many Bay Area families going through a divorce or custody matter, these costs can create an impossible choice: pay more than you can afford or try to navigate the court system on your own.

There is another option. The Law Office of Dan Sweeney provides another option: affordable, convenient and practical limited scope family law representation. Our model is built for people who need real attorney assistance without the financial commitment of traditional representation.

Whether your case is filed in San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Contra Costa, or Marin County, our remote sessions help you prepare necessary documents and give you the confidence to move your case forward.

Built for Bay Area Professionals

Bay Area locals are no strangers to the advantages of remote services. That’s smart, because this eliminates the need to take time off work, fight Bay Area traffic, or find parking. You schedule a session when it works for you, connect by video, and get your case moving forward.

Many Bay Area litigants have dual income households and amicable circumstances and just need help ensuring things are handled properly. Others have a more a strained relationship with their former mate and need help with support modifications, post judgment issues, or responding to a request for order. Whatever the situation, our focus is on practical, efficient assistance.

Limited scope representation, also called unbundled legal services, allows you to hire an attorney for a specific task rather than your entire case. You keep control of your case and your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. All sessions are conducted by video conference and we’re up-to-date on state and local rules in all Bay Area counties. We’ll prepare your documents during the session and provide filing instructions specific to your courthouse.

Traditional full-service family representation can be extremely beneficial. It’s just that it’s very expensive. Most experienced family law attorneys request retainers of $10,000 or more for a new case, with hourly bill rate ranging from $400 – $700 an hour. That’s simply beyond most people’s means. Our practice is designed to provide an affordable alternative at $300 per 90-minute session. Our project-based, or limited-scope, representation is confined to the most important parts of your case: your initial pleadings, your request for custody and visitation orders, your mandatory financial disclosures, or your application for judgment. We pack a lot into our sessions and complete most projects in just one session. More complicated projects, like applications for judgments or complex discovery requests may require an additional session. An entire uncontested divorce with both parties’ cooperation and agreement can often be conducted in just a few remote sessions.

Yes. We assist clients across all Bay Area counties including San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Solano.

Written discovery is one of our areas of focus. We can help you draft form interrogatories, special interrogatories, requests for production of documents, and requests for admission. We also assist with subpoena preparation for records from third parties.
